International students of AmSU have learned what a universal gesture will gain a person’s trust in any country

News and events

On February 29, students and teachers of the Chair of Psychology and Educational science held a communication training among international students aimed at preventing extremism in the student community.
17 students from China, Mali, Nigeria, Congo, and Sudan took part in the training.
The training on effective communication with international students has become useful for academic staff, administrative staff and students who regularly interact with international students. The following topics were raised during the training:
1. Intercultural communication: Understanding cultural differences and their impact on communication.
2. Active Listening skills: The ability to listen and ask questions to better understand the other person's point of view.
3. Ethics of communication: Showing respect for differences, elimination of stereotypes and discrimination.
4. Non-verbal communication: The meaning of gestures, facial expressions and distance between people in different cultures.
"When communicating, people often try to hide the inner side of the palm, as it is a rather intimate area, and keep their hands in their pockets or move to a closed pose. But if you want to win over a person, you should show open palms. This gesture means trust and openness to others. Despite the language barrier, an open palm is considered a universal sign of friendliness for other people", the training organizers said.
5. Language and terminology: Using clear and precise terms, avoiding ambiguity.
6. Overcoming barriers: The ability to work together and solve problems arising because of cultural differences.
7. Adjusting to a new environment: Helping international students adapt to new learning and living conditions.
So what is living in harmony? The participants of the training came to the conclusion that living in harmony means striving for balance in all spheres of life. It means living in peace with yourself and others, respecting other people and their opinions, and striving to find common solutions in difficult situations.
It is important to take care of your health and well-being, develop your talents, as well as participate in public life and help those who need support. After the training, many participants exchanged contacts in order to continue communicating. Such events can become the start of a friendship between students.
