Students of the Department of Social Sciences learned about the culture of information consumption

On April 18, the first and second year students of Sociology met with the leading analyst of the Regional Management Center Anton Sirotov. Future sociologists learned about the culture of media consumption, the mechanisms of disinformation and fake information, the essence of propaganda, classification of information sources and about information hygiene. The meeting was held within the framework of cooperation between AmSU and ANO “Regions Dialog”.
The specialist told about the culture of information consumption. Students of sociology learned about what it means to consume information taking into account its quality, level and development. The main criteria of media consumption according to Anton are the following:
•    reliability, completeness, accessibility of the presentation
•    formality, competence, expertise
•    efficiency, breadth of distribution
The analyst focused on the reliability of information and the fact as the foundation of reliability. The expert also spoke about the mechanisms of disinformation, fake information as its material, gave examples of it on the base of the coverage of military operations of the past and present. Anton shared methods to recognize a fake:
•    critical examination of information content
•    checking other sources
•    appealing to experts
Students learned about the essence of propaganda, examples of constructive and destructive propaganda, the difference between traditional media and modern mass media: mass media has the possibility of getting a feedback from media consumers and spreading more diverse content.
At the end of the lecture, the analyst told students about the rules of information hygiene:
•    if not necessary, do not dive into the information field more than three times a day - morning, noon, evening - two or three hours before sleep.
•    form a list of trusted sources for yourself, do not read and trust new sources immediately.
•    always evaluate any information critically.
•    choose and spend a day without consuming information.

At the end of the meeting Anton held a small practical lesson.
“The meeting received a positive feedback from students, – said Arkady Leonov, head of the Sociology educational program. – and it is a good basis for studying the Sociology of media communications in senior years”.
