On June 27, Vilena Yakimova, Associate Professor of the School of Finance, Head of the Laboratory for the Study of Regional Entrepreneurial Ecosystems in the digital environment, took part in the VII International Symposium on Regional Economics "Cities of Modern Times: the GLASS system" («Города нового времени: система GLASS»). The event was organized on the basis of the Institute of Economics of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in Ekaterinburg. The symposium was co-organized by Ural Federal University, Ural State University of Economics and the Social Sciences Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Vilena Yakimova presented the results of a study conducted with the grant support of the Russian Science Foundation, making a presentation on the topic "The impact of the concept of a "smart city" on the development of a regional ecosystem." The report reveals the results of an empirical study of the impact of digitalization of urban economy on the components and productivity of ecosystems of Russian regions with large and the largest "smart cities". The results of the assessment of socio-economic and system-forming effects that arise in regions with "smart cities" are presented. The gaps between the level of formation of the components of the regional ecosystem and its productivity in creating socio-economic benefits for business and the population are assessed.

The symposium was devoted to the prospects of urban development: the place they occupy in the new socio-economic conditions; the features they should have; the peculiarities of managing their transformations. During the three days of the symposium, more than 150 regional scientists and specialists in the field of urban development from Russia, the USA, China, Latin America, CIS countries discussed modern concepts of urban development and the image of the city of the future – high-tech, economically developed, comfortable to live in, eco-friendly, characterized by high quality environment and based in its transformations on the need to balance the interests of all its inhabitants. The events of the symposium included a plenary session, sectional reports and round tables, during which the problems of sustainable green development of urban agglomerations, creative re-industrialization of cities, alternative data sources based on the use of digitalization methods for their collection, the future of industrial territories and the role of the editor-in-chief in the management of an economic scientific journal were discussed.
